the-iphone-3g.org
I am willing to buy this domain but the issue is that the replies on the thread where the owner has asked for appraisal are pretty negative and scary too!
Is it really possible that if I plan something related to the iphone 3g using this domain, can Apple Inc, sue me?
I have a good idea but I am afraid about this issue of intellectual property rights?
Please guide.

I'd stay away from trademark names. Using DomainFight.net, here are some examples where Apple went after trademarked domains:

Apple is very aggressive at protecting its trademarks. Legal fees can run 6 figures. Owning domains like that is like playing with fire.

I would suggest against buying it. If Apple catches wind of it, chances are they will prosecute you. Jeff said it best; Apple can be VERY protective of its name and trademark.
