Default ".IN Passes One Million Registrations And Looks To Future For Growth"

Earlier this month, the one millionth active .IN domain name was registered according to the National Internet Exchange of India (NIXI). This includes registrations across all second level domains including .org.in, .ac.in and .co.in.

The number of registrations has grown from 550,000 registrations as of November 2009.

The potential for growth is enormous though as despite the growth of the economy over the past decade, India’s information economy remains impoverished compared with its potential says a Live Mint report by Osama Manzar, founder and director of Digital Empowerment Foundation and chairman of the Manthan award.

Thanks but has there been an official announcement from the Registry? The article makes it sound like they are quoting NIXI.

It seems they are quoting the talks they have with some NIXI officials but there is no official announcement yet from registry.

Few months back in Hyderabad meeting by CDAC, one of the senior Registry official quoted in his address that .IN registry has crossed 1 million mark. (some IN Forum Members were also there)

As per our detailed talk with Registry officials they are planning celebrations but they will come with announcement some time in last week of November.

Rest assured we will inform all of you well in advance.

It has been confirmed in this news item Let’s make the Internet equitable - Columns - livemint.com

Additional secretary in the information technology ministry, suggests that all telecommunications firms should provide users a free domain name corresponding to their mobile number, with .IN extension.

If by any chance this plan becomes a reality then we will soon have 1 Billion .IN names

Everybody is quoting the same Mint story by Osama Manzar, we dont know whether its actually true or just a guestimate unless it is officially announced...
