I think it's a decent offer for your domain.

Whether you should take it or negotiate further really depends on the circumstances of the negotiation.

If, for instance, it's an offer through Sedo, you may want to send it off to auction instead.

If it's an end user you're negotiating with, you may want to make a slightly higher counter-offer.

If you've already done some negotiating and that's where you've arrived at, I think it's fine to accept this offer.

There are (or were) a lot of PlanetGuru (planetguru.com) publications in the US for NRIs and PIOs with the word Guru in it, e.g., SeattleGuru.com.

The original guru outfit had print publications for individual cities, but then a few years back they sold to some new owner who was not prepared to have the enterprise managed properly and the whole thing went on hold. However, the brand is still solid and most of the good guru names have been snapped up.

I would think the domain would be worth at least $400 and probably twice that much. At $230, it’s hardly worth the time it takes to complete the transfer.

There are lots of dot-in domains for hotels in individual metros. Your domain makes a great overall brand.

domainwalla, i assume your from india?

what do you think of hotelyaar.in? i registered hotelyaar.in, .co.in and .com, so got the lot

You did the right thing by registering hotelyaar in three extensions. You might want to look at Devanagari options too.

In reply to your question, I’m merely a PIO who has been in the U.S. for too long. I’m trying to shift back to Kolkata or Chennai and set up a development shop to handle the domain names that I already own.

The best way to skyrocket the value of a domain name is to develop it into a site that attracts hazar unique visitors on a daily basis and has strong ongoing revenue generation.

On that business model, you don’t even need ten good domains to strike it rich. Your HotelGuru domain is in that category. By complementing the website with a sales office in India to sign up relevant hotels to list in your directory, you have the opportunity to achieve what venture capitalists call ‘escape velocity.’

At first I only registered domains that had personal appeal to me, e.g., domains with vague or shady words such as dintdie or r_ndee. But then I realized that the prospects for revenue generation for those domains were not going to be strong, so I let them drop.

Now I only register domains that complement (add value) to the ones that I already own, or that are the types of domains that I could use to launch genuine websites, from India.

The Hindi domains that I own are for words or phrases that people like to say often, and so may have good generic branding power. However, since those types of domains are rarely available as fresh registrations, I’ve started to go into Bengali domains.

You have demonstrated great smarts and I wish you all the best.

Default General valuation considerations

It is difficult to estimate future value in a field where equity-events are four to six years off.

One problem with desi domains is that since the market is so new, valuations are depressed. You could price for the market now (not recommended) or where you think prices will be or should be in one or two years.

Here is one tool that you can use to see the prices of single domains:

A trend that I expect in future is to see multiple domains grouped together and sold as a bundle.

Rick ‘the domain king’ never buys a domain unless he has some business plan for it in his head.

I never register a domain unless I’m confident that lots of people will be interested in registering or buying it later on. Or, if I plan on developing a domain into a site myself.

I don’t touch gambling domains because as a U.S. resident, there are legal risks from being involved in that industry.

I don’t see a lot of price elasticity in domain sales. You could estimate a buyer’s ability to pay. If a company or promoter is prepared to enter a capital-intensive industry, for example, they will have enough capital to buy a $4k-$8k domain name.

I'd suggest put the domain name on auction. "hotelguru" is a nice domain name. There ought to be plenty of people out there who'd love to buy it for more than that
