I have archived some older Alexa Top 1 Million Sites and extracted similar information for .in sites using CSVed. What I got is quite interesting so I decided to post it here as well.
The stats below present the total number of all .ins (including 3rd levels) ranked in the Alexa top list for the last 13 months:
08/2009: 5079 domains
09/2009: 5091 domains
10/2009: 5071 domains
11/2009: 4964 domains
31/12/2009: 5182 domains
01/2010: 5125 domains
02/2010: 5237 domains
03/2010: 5253 domains
04/2010: no data
05/2010: 5680 domains
06/2010: 5770 domains
07/2010: 5871 domains
08/2010: 5896 domains
8/09/2010: 5842 domains
The first interesting notice is that .in market were rather stagnating in the last year. Of course, it doesn't mean there was no growth, but rather this growth wasn't faster compared to the rest of the world (on the average).
The second and even more interesting notice is that this situation has changed around December 2009 where we can see a noticable increase of Indian domains over the rest of the world in the top 1 mil. Since Dec 2009 the growth has been rather steady and bringing around 100+ domains per month to that rank although it is stopped this month (September).
Based on that Alexa rank we have ~16% growth of .in population which isn't as much as some would wish but it's IMO enough to look into .in future optimistic.
Hopefully that increase will continue and even accelerate for the next months which I wish to everybody here
